Last night the former library page in me took over.

In ramblings on May 11, 2010 at 7:24 am

When I moved into my condo, I converted my bedroom walk-in closet to a small library. I bought shelves. I brought all my books and placed them on it.

Haphazardly. Out of order.

Last night I decided to organize them, finally.

I debated different sorting strategies.  I could sort the books by Subject. I could have the most popular books kept on one shelf.

Ultimately, I decided to sort alphabetically by author.

And… use Goodreads to create virtual shelves.

I’m thinking that with this system, I’ll have some organization as well as the ability to find my books really quickly.

This project will take a few days, I think.

What happened to the stock market yesterday

In ramblings on May 7, 2010 at 6:11 am

Yesterday, the Dow had its biggest intra-day drop ever. 998 points.

What happened?

First, a rumor suggests that “A trader may have accidentally entered $16 billion – instead of $16 million – in a deal involving Procter and Gamble, sparking the massive selloff.”

Second, “At around 2:43 p.m., the New York Stock Exchange halted trading in a few stocks for about 90 seconds in order to help traders stabilize prices. At about the same time, it looked as if something went wrong — badly wrong — with a program trade. Because the NYSE had halted some of the trading, the trades went to secondary markets, where there were no buyers. Individuals who had borrowed money from their brokerage firms to buy stocks or had sell orders at specific prices were instantly sold out.”

Wow.

P.S. Whoever bought Accenture at $0.01 made a killing. At one point during this fiasco, someone was forced to sell at a penny. The stock eventually closed at $41.09. Lucky buyer!

Let’s go back to calling orcas killer whales

In ramblings on April 15, 2010 at 7:05 am

What code phrase has activated the murderous sleeper cell of orcas?

Remember the Sea World trainer?

Earlier this week, there was a report in Seattle of a pod of orcas attacking a gray whale.

Yesterday the 5th gray whale this month was found dead.

Suspicious, isn’t it?

Tonight will be the biggest and brightest full moon of 2010

In browsing, ramblings on January 29, 2010 at 2:57 pm

Tonight’s full moon will be the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. It offers anyone with clear skies an opportunity to identify easy-to-see features on the moon.

This being the first full moon of 2010, it is also known as the wolf moon, a moniker dating back to Native American culture and the notion that hungry wolves howled at the full moon on cold winter nights.

If you want to take full advantage of this moon’s powers, I recommend wearing your Three Wolf Moon Shirt tonight. The shirt’s powers ought to be magnified even more than usual.
