Better than the original, wouldn’t you say?

5 reasons to like Jimmy Fallon’s show

In ramblings on January 10, 2010 at 12:47 pm

The show’s premiere week was brutally unwatchable.

But, the writers and the producers have worked hard at tuning the show to work for Jimmy’s style and I’m glad to say the show is really rockin now.

I think what they’ve done well is integrate the Roots into the comedy bits very effectively.

Example:

1. The Roots Audience Improvisation

I wish this staple of every improvisational comedy troupe was performed more often on the show. It cracks me up every time.

2. Slow Jam the News

Sometimes the day’s news can’t be joked about. Here’s a suggestion, Jimmy. Slow Jam the News.

3. Thank You Notes

“Thank you, NBC, for announcing that Jay Leno will be moving back to 11:30. It’ll be interesting to see how Jay and Conan do against Dave and how we do against the Perfect Push Up infomercial.”

4. Shout Outs

“I gotta give a shout out to mitochondria. It’s the powerhouse of the cell!”

5. Audience Ipod Playlists

Occasionally there’s an electronics recycling drive and the audience turns in computers, cellphones, and ipods. Jimmy notices a few weird playlists.

“Mark Davidson. On your ipod I see you have Bebop Swing, New Jack Swing, 50′s Swing…and then you have this last one… Swings Both Ways.”

Half-decent writers

Nerdy, I’m sure, but I like their books.

Tobias Buckell

Caribbean steampunk. Caribbean space opera. He’s created a unique future.

Lois McMaster Bujold

Her last couple of books have been in the fantasy genre, but I especially enjoy her Vorkosigan series.

Jim Butcher

This year he wrapped up his Alera series. There’s still the Dresden Files, though. He’s really prolific and he’s still young so lots of books left to be written.

Orson Scott Card

The Ender series.

Raymond Feist

The Riftwar Saga has been in print for over 20 years and new books are constantly being added to the series.

Jeff Lindsay

The Dexter series on Showtime are based on Jeff’s books. He’s taken the characters in a different direction than the TV show.

John Scalzi

Old Man’s War. The Android’s Dream. He’s sort of like Elmore Leonard crossed with Robert Heinlein. My favorite sci-fi writer.

David Wellington

I read his first vampire book, 13 Bullets. He’s written 3 sequels. SCARY.
