My 4-point vision for college football playoffs

In ramblings on December 11, 2009 at 10:52 am

1. 16 teams

This keeps regular season relevant as conference champs get automatic playoff spots.

And… there will still be enough at-large spots for high ranking teams who don’t win their conferences.

2. Two weeks in beginning of December to determine final four

Extending the season for 16 teams is not going to hurt academics. We have games during mid-terms. We have basketball teams playing during the winter break. It’ll be all right.

3. Let the bowls bid for the right to host the final four and championship games

This keeps the bowl system alive and NCAA maximizes revenue.

Bowls can still make money hosting interesting matchups.

4. Two weeks in beginning of January to determine national champion

Two weeks of playoffs in January? I remember when the bowls were all done New Years weekend. Wasn’t last year’s championship game in the 3rd week of January?

That’s it! Easy peasy, right?

Half-decent writers

In faves on December 7, 2009 at 1:00 am

Nerdy, I’m sure, but I like their books.

Tobias Buckell

Caribbean steampunk. Caribbean space opera. He’s created a unique future.

Lois McMaster Bujold

Her last couple of books have been in the fantasy genre, but I especially enjoy her Vorkosigan series.

Jim Butcher

This year he wrapped up his Alera series. There’s still the Dresden Files, though. He’s really prolific and he’s still young so lots of books left to be written.

Orson Scott Card

The Ender series.

Raymond Feist

The Riftwar Saga has been in print for over 20 years and new books are constantly being added to the series.

Jeff Lindsay

The Dexter series on Showtime are based on Jeff’s books. He’s taken the characters in a different direction than the TV show.

John Scalzi

Old Man’s War. The Android’s Dream. He’s sort of like Elmore Leonard crossed with Robert Heinlein. My favorite sci-fi writer.

David Wellington

I read his first vampire book, 13 Bullets. He’s written 3 sequels. SCARY.
